Ceci N’est Pas Une Robe

Ceci N’est Pas Une Robe is a sculptural study in material construction, surface patterning, and cultural architectural language. Built entirely from layered canvas strips shaped over a mannequin form, the piece explores how structural systems and ornamental geometries can transform a familiar silhouette into an architectural object. While shaped like a dress, the piece functions as a rigid sculptural form, built through layered canvas and structural shaping methods often used in model-making and other spatial design processes.

The surface is hand-painted in royal blue, maroon, and gold, incorporating geometric and floral motifs drawn from Persian architecture—forms commonly found in mosque ornament, tilework, and historic architectural pattern systems. By applying these non-figurative architectural motifs to a figurative structure, the piece creates a spatial and cultural inversion: a “building disguised as a garment.” The work functions as a three-dimensional interpretation of how architectural identities, cultural memory, and decorative logic can be recontextualized in new spatial formats.

Displayed at the Art, Design & Architecture Museum in 2019, the piece reflects an interdisciplinary approach that merges sculpture, architectural surface design, and cultural aesthetics into a unified spatial object.
